If you think a child has measles.

It is vitally important that anyone with suspected measles symptoms isolates at home with no contact with others. They should NOT go to hospitals, GP practices, pharmacies or any other health setting. You should call your GP who will take them through a screening process and if measles is suspected or confirmed, they will give you further advice. Alternatively, you can contact NHS 111. Potential cases will be reported by the patients GP to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for further investigation.

Symptoms of measles

The first symptoms of measles develop around 10 days after you’re infected. These can include:

• cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a cough
• sore, red eyes that may be sensitive to light
• watery eyes
• swollen eyes
• a high temperature (fever), which may reach around 40°C (104°F)
• small greyish-white spots in the mouth
• aches and pains
• loss of appetite
• tiredness, irritability and a general lack of energy

The measles rash appears around 2 to 4 days after the initial symptoms and normally fades after about a week. The rash:

• is made up of small red-brown, flat or slightly raised spots that may join together into larger blotchy patches
• usually first appears on the head or neck, before spreading outwards to the rest of the body
• is slightly itchy for some people

We would like to bring an important matter to your attention regarding the use of Snapchat by our students. As you may already know, Snapchat is a popular social media platform that allows users to share pictures, videos, and messages with each other. However, it is important to note that according to the app's terms of service, the legal age requirement for using Snapchat is 13.

Recently, we have become aware of a number of our students who are using Snapchat, despite being below the legal age. While it is understandable that children may be curious and want to explore the virtual world, it is crucial that we ensure they are engaging with age-appropriate content and platforms that prioritise their safety and well-being.

We would like to emphasise the potential risks associated with Snapchat usage for children below the legal age. Snapchat allows users to send and receive images and messages that disappear after a short period. While this feature may seem appealing, it also creates an environment where inappropriate content can be shared and viewed without any trace. This anonymity can unfortunately lead to cyberbullying, sexting, and other harmful activities.

To address this issue, we would kindly ask you to have a conversation with your child regarding their usage of Snapchat. It is essential that you are aware of their online activities and the potential consequences it may have on their safety and emotional well-being.

We would also like to recommend a few practical steps you can take to further ensure their online safety:

1. Familiarise yourself with the Snapchat app and its functionalities. This will enable you to have informed discussions with your child about the potential risks and how to navigate them responsibly.
2. Encourage open communication. Create an environment where your child feels comfortable approaching you with any concerns or questions they may have regarding their online experiences.
3. Set clear boundaries and guidelines for technology use. Establish time limits for screen time and discuss appropriate online behavior and the importance of safeguarding personal information.
4. Monitor your child's online activities. Regularly check their devices and social media accounts to ensure they are adhering to the agreed-upon rules and guidelines.
5. Educate your child about online safety. Teach them about the potential risks and consequences of sharing personal information, engaging with strangers, and participating in inappropriate or harmful activities online.
